How to Prepare AVI files for Playback on Roku 3

This article shows you how to convert AVI to Roku 3 supported video formats so that you can play AVI files with Roku 3 properly.

I've been using the Roku 3 these past few months, and I can say without reservation that it absolutely rocks for watching movies and TV shows. For me, it was the combination of on-demand media and easy access to my own extensive media library that made Roku's case. The only problem I've encountered so far, is Roku's meager support for video formats. Officially, the Roku 3 only supports H.264 MKV and MP4/M4V video, meaning that's the only media recognized over USB and Plex‘Direct Play'. Chances are, most of my old movies are AVIs. Luckily, I've figured out the best way to play AVI files on the Roku 3. If you are in such issue, read on to get the quick solution.

To get AVI files and Roku 3 to play nicely, the easy workaround is to encode AVI to Roku 3 supported MP4 videos. Actually, the process is straightforward. What you need is a just a common video converter like EaseFab Video Converter. The software has a codec pack that enables conversion between different video and audio file formats, it can convert AVI, MKV, VOB, MOV, FLV, MPG, etc. to Roku 3 supported file format such as MP4 with the best quality. Below are the simple steps to prepare AVI files for playback with Roku 3 directly.

How to convert AVI to MP4 for Roku 3

1) Start the video converter, drag and drop the AVI files to the software window to import.

2) After the files are added, click "Profile" and select MP4 from Common Video as the output format. The reason mp4 is the target format is that by packing the videos in mp4, the file size will be reasonable small and the video quality remains.

Tip: There are also some optional tinkering you can take to make the videos look better on a HDTV screen, such as changing the aspect ratio or specifying the video resolution. Just click the Settings icon to do it.

3) Finally, hit the Convert button to star converting AVI to mp4 for Roku 3 playback.

After the conversion is completed, transfer the converted videos to Roku's SD card or to a USB stick that can be attached to Roku 3 streaming player. Now you can enjoy AVI movies with Roku 3.

You can also use the Roku Media Player channel to listen to music or view photos from a USB drive. Play an entire folder of music files by pressing Play on the remote while on a folder, or navigate to a specific track to play only that song. For photos, you can start a slideshow by pressing play while on a folder of photos.
