How to Play Recorded Windows Media Center WTV files on Roku 3

This tutorial shows you an easy way to stream and share Windows Media Center recorded content .WTV files with Plex and Roku 3.

I've been very happy with the DVR capability of Windows Media Center. And But what makes me extremely upset recently is that I find the Windows Media Center .wtv files won't play on my new Roku 3. Luckily, I've found an easy solution for this. Here are the steps you can take to play .WTV files through Roku 3.

How to Prepare Windows Media Center Recordings for playback with the Roku 3

To get your WMC shows over to the Roku, you first have to convert the files from the WTV format to a video format that the Roku 3 understands. Actually, it's not as difficult as you imagine. What's need is a just a common WTV converter for EaseFab Video Converter. It supports encoding WTV to Roku highly compatible MP4 videos with best quality. Another app you need is Plex. So download and install the two programs.

1. Open Windows Explorer and select the "Recorded TV" option under the "Favorites" section.

2. In the "Recorded TV" folder, you will see a list of recordings. These are the WTV files that Windows Media Center can understand. To convert a show, drag it over to the EaseFab Video Converter window. You can load any other files like VOB, TiVo recordings, AVI, etc. files you wish to convert.

3. After the files are added, click Profile and choose MP4 video from Common Video, which can be recognized by Roku 3 and Plex well. MKV is also a good choice; as a container format it takes whatever you give it.

Tip: There are also some optional tinkering you can take to make the videos look better on a HDTV screen, such as changing the aspect ratio or specifying the video resolution. Just click the Settings icon to do it.

4. Once you're ready, hit the "Convert" button and the conversion will begin.

5. While the file is converting, we can work on something else. Open Plex Media Server.

6. Select the option to "Add a section" in the "My Library" section.

7. Choose "Home Movies". We use this selection because of the filename we used in step 7. Otherwise, Plex won’t find the file. If you named the file with the proper Plex naming standards, you may select "Movies" or "TV Shows" if you like.

8.. Plex will scan the folder for your file. This may take a while even after the file conversion is complete.

9. After the file conversion is complete and Plex has found the file, head over to your Roku and install the Plex channel.

10. Open "Home Movies", or the proper section you chose in step 11 from within the Roku app and you should now be able to enjoy the show on your Roku device.

I rarely pay for apps, but I think the sum of $30 I paid for the Plex and EaseFab Video Converter apps was a great investment. The time I save not converting .wtv files is worth a lot more than six bucks!
